Significance of Ratha Saptami

In the Sanatana Dharma, Lord Surya is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is known as ‘the Pratyaksha Deiva’ – ‘the visible God’. He nourishes the mortal beings and provides them all with the most important source of life – sunlight. Ratha Saptami is an auspicious day that is dedicated to the worship of Surya Bhagwan. Also known as ‘Surya Jayanti’, it falls on the seventh day of Shukla Paksha during the month of Magha (January–February) as per the Vedic calendar.

Magha month is considered auspicious to worship Surya Bhagwan. Our scriptures recommend performing Pujas to the Lord on all Sundays of the sacred month to attain his divine blessings.

It is believed that by worshipping Lord Surya on Ratha Saptami, one can get rid of seven types of sins that they would have accumulated in their current and previous lives.

Ratha Saptami also marks the beginning of the harvest season. So, farmers offer special worship to Lord Surya on this day, praying for a good harvest.
